PANAJI: In order to expedite the process of laying overhead internet connections, the Department of Information Technology (DIT) in Goa has chosen to develop a portal as the removal of these cables from electrical poles proceeds. Through a new web portal, DIT has declared that internet service providers (ISPs) must register.
The electrical Department has launched a vigorous campaign to remove all cables mounted on electrical poles because the contract for cable removal with an agency ended on December 31, 2024. Disruptions have resulted from the separation, especially with regard to office connectivity in the state capital.
IT Minister Rohan Khaunte chaired a meeting to discuss the implementation of the new Telecom Right of Way (ROW) Rules 2024 and the problem of frequent telecom line outages. Chief Secretary Dr. V. Candavelou, the Secretary of Information Technology, and representatives from the Electricity Department attended the meeting.
“A portal will be launched to streamline the management of overhead internet cables on electricity poles,” said Prasanna Acharya, Director of the DIT. In accordance with Goa’s IT policy, ISPs may apply online, and the IT department will manage application processing. All cable installation-related problems will be fixed by this endeavor.
In the meantime, a vigorous campaign against the careless mounting of cables on power poles has been started by the Electricity Department. Engineers have identified a number of issues brought on by these uncontrolled installations.
“We will launch a vigorous campaign against unauthorized cables, and starting on February 1, we will eliminate all cables,” Executive Engineer Kashinath Shetye declared.
