MAPUSA: The nearly three-hour power outage at Mapusa District Hospital has drawn sharp criticism from Congress leader Amarnath Panjikar, who termed the incident a serious failure of governance and alleged negligence by the BJP-led state government.
According to reports, the outage began around 4:00 pm and severely affected essential hospital services, including lifts, lighting systems, and critical medical equipment. Patients, attendants, doctors, nurses, and hospital staff reportedly faced significant inconvenience during the disruption.
Panjikar said it was unacceptable that a major government hospital catering to thousands of patients in North Goa was left without power for hours, leading to disruption in healthcare services and causing hardship to those undergoing treatment.
He alleged that while the government frequently makes public announcements on development, basic infrastructure maintenance at critical institutions like hospitals has been neglected.
Questioning the Power Department’s preparedness, Panjikar sought clarification on how a district hospital could remain affected for nearly three hours and demanded accountability from the concerned authorities.
He further stated that the incident raises serious concerns about emergency backup systems and the overall reliability of essential services in government healthcare institutions.
Panjikar demanded an immediate inquiry into the power failure, fixation of responsibility, and urgent corrective measures to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply in all hospitals across the state.
He said the health and safety of patients cannot be compromised due to administrative lapses and stressed the need for a more accountable and responsive governance system.
