PANAJI: In a recent clarification, the Panaji Smart City Development Ltd. (IPSCDL) has stated that the water pipeline burst at Bhatlem, which resulted in significant water wastage and temporary flooding in low-lying areas, was not caused by any Smart City-related works. The incident occurred on February 2, 2025, in the Dhanlaxmi Colony area of Bhatlem, on the outskirts of Panaji.
According to IPSCDL, the water pipeline burst was due to an internal pipeline end cap breakage within Dhanlaxmi Colony. This breakage was an isolated event and not related to any activities undertaken by IPSCDL in the area. The authorities have emphasized that no Smart City development works were being conducted in the affected zone, thereby ruling out any connection between the pipeline burst and the Smart City initiatives.
The burst pipeline led to water flooding into dozens of homes in the low-lying area, causing significant distress to the residents. The flooding resulted in the destruction of appliances and furniture, prompting residents to demand compensation for the damages incurred. Despite the clarification from IPSCDL, the community remains outraged over the negligence that led to the incident.
Residents of Bhatlem have expressed their frustration and disappointment over the lack of immediate response from the authorities. The community is seeking prompt action and compensation for the losses suffered due to the flooding. The incident has highlighted the need for better maintenance and oversight of the water infrastructure in the area.
