OLD GOA: Old Goa Police played a crucial role in cracking a key link in a murder case registered in Sawantwadi, helping identify the victim and trace two accused in a joint operation with Sawantwadi Police.
The deceased was identified as Azim Khan, a native of Uttar Pradesh who worked at a shawarma and shakes café near the dargah in Old Goa. Police began the identification process after receiving information from Sawantwadi Police on the evening of October 6, 2026, about the death of a male person.
According to police information, the murder case was registered at Sawantwadi Police Station on October 7 under Crime No. 275/26 under Sections 103(1) and 238(a), read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Following the registration of the case, Sawantwadi Police approached Old Goa Police for assistance. Acting jointly, the two police teams traced Dipraj Govekar and Sahil Diwarkar, who were subsequently arrested by Sawantwadi Police after inquiry.
Preliminary details indicate that Khan was allegedly assaulted in Old Goa between noon and 1 pm on October 6 with a wooden stick, slaps and kicks following differences related to work at the café.
The accused allegedly placed the injured victim in an Alto car and travelled towards the Panaji bus stand before proceeding towards Sawantwadi. When Khan reportedly died during the journey, his body was allegedly disposed of in a forested area near Malgaon railway station in Sawantwadi.
The case is being investigated by Sawantwadi Police.
The coordinated efforts of Old Goa and Sawantwadi Police proved instrumental in establishing the victim’s identity and tracing the two accused. The incident highlights the importance of inter-state police coordination in investigating serious crimes spanning multiple locations.
