PANAJI: Goa Congress leaders have questioned the handling of the case involving Rahul Faldesai, son of BJP MLA Rajesh Faldessai, with party spokesperson Amit Palekar alleging that the accused was allowed to go free after apologising.
Palekar questioned how the matter was handled under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). “BNSS does not allow an accused to go scot-free. But the BJP MLA’s son was allowed to go scot-free after saying sorry,” he said.
Palekar further alleged that there may have been pressure on the complainant not to pursue the matter. “Probably, there was pressure on the complainant not to file the case,” he said, while warning that anyone could potentially become a victim of such incidents.
The Congress leader also criticised the broader law-and-order situation in Goa, saying, “Goa is turning into Mirzapur.”
Separately, GPCC working president and MLA Carlos Ferreira raised concerns over women’s safety under the BJP-led government.
Ferreira said slogans such as “Nari Shakti” and “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” would have little meaning if women did not feel safe.
Referring to the Supreme Court’s suo motu cognizance of recent crimes against women in Delhi-NCR, Ferreira questioned the effectiveness of law enforcement and accountability in protecting women.
The statements from the Congress leaders come amid a wider political debate over women’s safety, policing and the handling of complaints involving politically connected individuals in Goa.
