PANAJI: Public Works Department (PWD) has refuted claims that the free water scheme will, in turn, lead to an increase in water bills for many.
However, PWD released the breakup of the water bill under the new scheme with special reference to those using above 16 m3 water to refute the claims that the free water scheme will increase the water bill for many consumers.
“Consumers with common water connection to 2 or more houses/flats/duplex will continue pay water tariff for full consumption as applicable and such consumers, the benefit of the lower tariff shall be charged based on the number of flats/houses,” PWD said.
As announced earlier, there will be zero charges for households consuming up to 16 m3 water, said PWD in its release. Of the 3.18 lakh water consumers in the state, 60 % will get zero water bill, asserted PWD.
For those consuming water above 16 m3, the bill will be generated using into 3 slabs method – first slab : 0 to 15 m3- rate is Rs 3.5 per m3. Second slab: 16 m3 to 25 m3 rate is Rs 9 per m3. Similarly, the rate for the third slab, i.e. 26 m3 to 40 m3, is Rs 15 per m3.
In effect, those consumers who consume up to 30 m3 will get a water bill of approx. Rs 217 (15m3 3.5 + 10m3 9 + 5m3 15) said PWD.
After that, for consumption above 40 m3 to 50 m3, it is a flat Rs 15 per m3 for all units. Similarly, for consumption above 50 m3, it is a flat Rs 25 per m3 for all units.
For the category of ‘small hotels & restaurants, hostels having rooms less than 15 or government tourist hostels (non-air-conditioned) having area up to 150 m3 the minimum water bill has been reduced to Rs 250 per month.
