PANAJI: In a recent exchange that has sparked significant debate in Goan politics, Minister Sudin Dhavalikar has vehemently criticized MLA Vijai Sardesai for his comments targeting Dayanand Bandodkar, Goa’s first Chief Minister. Dhavalikar’s remarks came as a response to what he perceived as an unjustified attack on Bandodkar’s legacy.
During his address, Dhavalikar expressed his confusion and disappointment over Sardesai’s motives, emphasizing the unity and national identity that binds all Indians. “We are first Indians, then Goans,” he stated, underscoring the importance of national unity and the respect due to historical figures like Bandodkar.
Dhavalikar highlighted the immense pressure and challenges faced by Dayanand Bandodkar during his tenure as the first Chief Minister of Goa. Bandodkar, who served from 1963 to 1973, played a crucial role in shaping the state’s early development and navigating the complex political landscape following the Opinion Poll of 1967. This poll was a significant referendum in which the people of Goa voted against merging with Maharashtra.
“We cannot blame Dayanand Bandodkar and move forward; we cannot compare any Chief Minister of Goa with Bandodkar,” Dhavalikar asserted. He argued that Bandodkar’s contributions and the historical context in which he operated should be respected and understood, rather than criticized or compared to contemporary leaders.
Dhavalikar’s comments also touched on the broader theme of political legacy and the importance of honoring the past while working towards the future. He suggested that current political leaders should focus on addressing the present challenges and opportunities rather than engaging in historical debates that could divide the community.
