PANAJI: Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte, shared insights on a meeting held with the Department of Animal Husbandry and the Police to develop a comprehensive SOP regarding the ongoing issue of stray cattle and dogs impacting Goa’s beaches.
The SOP, now in place, integrates focused efforts within the ongoing beach cleaning drive to specifically target stray dogs and cattle.
Speaking on the issue, Tourism Minister, Rohan A. Khaunte said, “Tourists and locals deserve safe and enjoyable beach experiences. From January 10, the beach cleaning drives will take on a dual focus—ensuring cleanliness and addressing the issue of stray cattle and dogs. This is not just about appearances; it’s about safety and responsibility.”
In a collaborative approach, specific departments have been assigned as nodal authorities from Animal Husbandry, the Department of Tourism and The Police Department to provide enforcement and support where needed.
The Minister also highlighted the need to utilize technology effectively through the Beach Vigil App, tourists and locals can upload photos and report stray animal concerns directly, allowing immediate action and ensure accountability.
Acknowledging the pivotal role of local stakeholders, the Minister stated “Whatever happens on our beaches, it is a shared responsibility. Tourists or locals getting bitten while walking or enjoying the beach is unacceptable. We need collective cooperation to prevent such incidents,” he emphasized.
From January 10, 2025, the Beach cleaning drives will intensify efforts to address stray cattle and dogs and early February 2025 the progress of these initiatives will be reviewed to identify next steps.
The Department of Animal Husbandry has been tasked with drafting a comprehensive long-term plan, incorporating inputs from panchayats and NGOs.
A long-term plan essential for sustainable solutions. The has already sent a letter to Animal Husbandry, and with the Chief Minister’s intervention and necessary infrastructure support, ensuring that these measures are effective and enduring.
The Department of Tourism remains committed to creating a safe, hygienic, and welcoming environment across all its beaches.
These measures are expected to not only safeguard tourists and locals but also enhance the state’s image as a globally renowned tourist destination.
