VASCO: Devotees travelling to the Velankanni shrine are set to get improved rail connectivity, with plans underway to operate three special trains between Vasco da Gama and Velankanni during the upcoming pilgrimage season starting in August.
According to August D’Costa, member of the Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee nominated by South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes, a key meeting on the Velankanni special train service was held at Hubballi on May 27, where railway authorities confirmed the proposed operation of three special trains on the route.
The first service is expected to depart from Vasco on August 27, while the final return service from Velankanni is scheduled for November 8, providing relief to thousands of devotees travelling annually to the popular pilgrimage destination.
D’Costa said suggestions were placed before railway authorities to improve passenger convenience, including revised departure timings—9 am from Vasco and 11.30 pm from Velankanni—to make the journey more comfortable for travellers.
He also stressed the need for additional coach capacity due to high seasonal demand, proposing full-length trains with upgraded coaches to accommodate around 84 passengers per coach, aimed at reducing long waiting lists and ensuring confirmed bookings for devotees.
Among other demands raised was a request to introduce a halt at Cansaulim railway station instead of Majorda, citing better accessibility for passengers from Cortalim and nearby villages.
Additionally, it was suggested that the Vasco–Kulem passenger train be shifted to Platform No. 1 at Vasco railway station to ease congestion and improve passenger safety by reducing the need to cross the foot overbridge.
Railway authorities are expected to take a final decision on the operational details of the special train services in the coming weeks.
