QUEPEM: Hindu festival of Vatapornima was celebrated with great enthusiasm in Curchorem, Quepem and Sanguem areas. The festival gives an indirect message to protect Banayan trees for posterity.
Vatpoornima is a tradition and ritual which has kept the spirit of Hindus alive in Goa. Savitri served her husband under the Banyan tree. It was there that Yamadeva returned his life to Satyavana. Therefore, the Banyan tree is worshipped.
Jyeshtha Poornima is also known as Vatapornima.
On this day, Suvasini women (married women) worship the Banayan tree.
In fact, Vatsavitri’s fast is a three-day fast.
The scriptures say that women who are unable to fast for a full three days should observe the fast only on the day of Vatpoornima
Let’s find out when and where the vow is.
On Vatsavitri day, Suvasini women worship Banayan trees and pray for their husbands’longevity.
After completing the morning routine, the Banayan tree is worshipped by wearing Saubhagyalankaar.
In modern times, it is customary to bring a branch of a Banayan tree home and worship it.
However, it is advised not to do so. And on this occasion, most Hindu women celebrate Vada pornima near temples or religious places where mostly we find Banayan trees where women practice these religious rituals with happiness.
Therefore, the purpose of worshipping the Banayan tree is to create awareness of the responsibility of tree protection.
