New Delhi: The future of Ajit Agarkar as India’s chief selector has been the subject of discussion, especially with the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 approaching. Addressing the speculation, Rajeev Shukla clarified that decisions regarding such key positions are made collectively by the board at the appropriate time.
He indicated that the Board of Control for Cricket in India follows a structured approach, ensuring that any call is taken with the broader interests of Indian cricket in mind. For now, stability appears to be the priority, with Agarkar continuing in his role as chairman of the senior selection committee.
Recent developments suggest that his tenure has been renewed for another year, reflecting the board’s intent to maintain consistency as India builds towards the next major global tournament. The move is seen as part of a long term strategy to ensure continuity in team selection and planning.
Agarkar’s time in charge has coincided with a highly successful phase for Indian cricket. Between late 2023 and early 2026, teams selected under his leadership reached four major international finals and secured three titles, including two T20 World Cups and one Champions Trophy. These achievements have strengthened confidence in his leadership.
His tenure has also been marked by decisive and sometimes challenging calls. The selection panel oversaw the Test retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, while gradually transitioning away from senior players such as Mohammed Shami. In another notable decision, Shubman Gill was left out of a T20 World Cup squad in favour of Ishan Kishan, who was in strong form at the time.
Rather than seeking an extension, Agarkar has focused on performance and results. With a proven record and major tournaments ahead, the board’s approach reflects both trust in his leadership and the importance of continuity in shaping the team’s future.
