BENAULIM: Former Chief Minister and Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao today said that he is ready to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in 2024, if Election Commission of India (ECI) re-introduces ballot voting.
Alemao was addressing the press conference in South Goa on EVM manipulation.
“I am ready to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in 2024, if Election Commission of India (ECI) re-introduces ballot voting,” said Alemao
He further said that said that voting with ballot papers was the best option to conduct assembly elections.
Alemao has raised serious doubts about the usage of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) for elections. “I don’t want to comment further on the EVMs, but the results of the panchayat elections have proved lots of things,” he added.
Alemao said he was the first to have suspected possible manipulation of EVMs by some forces in order to benefit certain candidates. He had demanded that paper trails should be counted to bring more transparency.
“Legal luminaries are of the opinion that the Election Commission of India (ECI) should provide enough safeguards and build confidence among the voters in both – the electoral system and technology.” he added.
He said that his supporters have been demanding that he contest the election. “People from Sanguem, Quepem, and Canacona want me to contest. When people want me to contest, I will contest,” he said.
Alemao also said that party nomination doesn’t matter to him as “he was the people’s candidate”.
