VASCO: A children’s park from Baina, which comes under the Mormugao municipal council’s jurisdiction, has turned into a dan of anti-social elements recently. This park has remained neglected for decades and needs immediate attention.
Children’s parks are built to have recreational activities and a place to play and enjoy the children. Mormugao municipal area has got multiple Children’s Parks, but most of the parks have turned lacklustre due to the neglect from the authorities concerned. One such example is the Children’s park at Baina, which now looks like a haunted place, and hardly any children dare to visit this place.
A local Grocery shop owner Ashraf S. said that this Children’s Park was built by the Chowgules way back in the 60s. After that, MLA Sheikh Hassan laid the foundation stone for the renovation work of this park. Later, Councillor Deepak Naik too laid the foundation stone to take up the renovation work of this park. But sadly, the park has remained in dilapidated condition.
A government higher secondary student from Baina who was sitting in this park said that in the evening time this park is frequently visited by the group of miscreants and Street drinkers who often tend to do alcohol abuse, quarrel and fight. It is not safe here at night; therefore, nobody comes here,” he added.
A visit to this park revealed that there is wild vegetation and weeds grown here. The park swings are absent, and the benches are broken. The toilets which were built around 2010 are in bad shape. There is no illumination here, and after dusk, this place turns dark and dangerous. This park area has also become a safe heaven for beggars, drunkards and anti-social elements.
