New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate on Thursday carried out raids at 10 locations across Delhi and Uttar Pradesh as part of a money laundering investigation involving the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust and Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur, institutions linked to Samajwadi Party leader and former Uttar Pradesh minister Azam Khan.
The searches were conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act across Rampur, Saharanpur and Delhi. The investigation centres on allegations of illegal land acquisition for the university and the suspected diversion of government funds through private contractors for the creation of assets linked to the trust and the educational institution.
According to officials, the ED probe stems from 26 FIRs registered by the Uttar Pradesh Police. The cases include allegations of extortion, fraud, forgery and criminal conspiracy, with investigators examining whether public money was siphoned off during the execution of government contracts.
The agency alleges that contractors who secured government projects diverted a portion of those funds to the trust and Jauhar University through donations and payments connected to construction activities. Investigators are now tracing the financial trail to establish how the money moved between private contractors and entities associated with the university.
During the searches, the ED examined financial records, property documents and digital evidence believed to be crucial in identifying the alleged proceeds of crime. Officials said several important documents and electronic records were seized, including material related to suspected bogus donations received by the trust.
The agency is also scrutinising banking transactions and other financial records to determine whether government funds were illegally channelled into developing university infrastructure and acquiring assets. The investigation aims to uncover the broader money laundering network and identify individuals or entities involved in the alleged diversion of public funds.
The ED has not announced any arrests in the case so far, and the investigation remains ongoing as officials continue analysing the seized documents and digital evidence.
