New Delhi: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor’s shikara ride on Dal Lake has put Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism potential and security situation in the international spotlight. During his visit to the Union Territory on Wednesday, Gor indicated that the United States could consider downgrading its travel advisory for J&K, citing improvements in security.
Gor said New Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had taken significant steps to make the region safer. He also highlighted the growing interest among Americans in visiting Kashmir and suggested that Washington’s existing travel guidance could be reconsidered.
Calling Jammu and Kashmir “an important part of India”, Gor said he was “thrilled to be here” during his first visit to the region. His shikara ride across Dal Lake added a strong tourism message to the diplomatic visit, showcasing one of Kashmir’s most recognisable attractions.
Gor also held talks with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, with discussions focusing on expanding ties between J&K and the United States. Abdullah described the meeting as productive and said the two sides explored areas where Washington could strengthen its engagement with the Union Territory.
According to Abdullah, tourism, horticulture and the emerging economy were among the key areas discussed. He said he was optimistic that engagement between J&K and the US would expand in the coming years, with further conversations expected between officials in Washington, New Delhi and the Union Territory.
The Chief Minister also referred to certain longstanding issues that would need to be addressed gradually, while expressing confidence about taking the relationship forward.
Gor’s remarks on security and the potential review of the US travel advisory are particularly significant for Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism industry, which has sought stronger international confidence in the region.
The visit comes as authorities continue efforts to promote Kashmir as a safe and attractive destination for international travellers. Gor’s public appearance on Dal Lake, his comments on security and his description of J&K as an important part of India together provided a notable diplomatic and tourism boost to the region.
