Panaji: Panaji recently welcomed a high-level international delegation as part of a comprehensive review of the CITIIS 2.0 program. This visit underscored the city’s commitment to sustainable urban development, particularly in the realm of waste management. The initiative, “Amchi Swachh Panaji – Ensuring Zero Landfill for a Thriving Panaji,” serves as a model for innovation in urban sustainability.
At the heart of this initiative is the collaboration between Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd. (IPSCDL) and international partners such as the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the German Development Bank (KfW), the European Union (EU), and the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA). IPSCDL’s selection as one of the top 18 winning cities in the CITIIS 2.0 challenge is a testament to Panaji’s forward-thinking approach to urban challenges.
The review process focused on evaluating the program’s progress, strategies, and impact, particularly its citizen-centric and decentralized waste management approach. IPSCDL presented an overview of ongoing activities, highlighting solid waste management and smart solutions designed to promote sustainability and circularity. The delegation conducted site visits to waste management facilities, including the Material Recovery Facility at St. Inez and the bio-methanation plant near Heera Petrol Pump, as well as residential colonies implementing 16-way waste segregation.
These inspections not only showcased Panaji’s commitment to reducing landfill dependency but also its efforts to engage citizens in waste management through innovative infrastructure and decentralized processing. The delegation’s visit reinforced the significance of collaborative international partnerships in achieving sustainable urban development goals.
