PANAJI: The Bombay High Court at Goa has sought a detailed update from the Goa Police on the investigation into the alleged assault of an advocate at Morjim last month.
The direction came from a Division Bench of Justice Valmiki Menezes and Justice Amit Jamsandekar while hearing a suo motu petition initiated by the court following the incident.
The State has been directed to inform the court about the progress made in the investigation and clarify whether the probe has reached the stage of filing a chargesheet.
The court has fixed the matter for further hearing on November 3, when the investigation report is expected to be placed on record.
The case also comes against the backdrop of discussions over proposed legislation aimed at strengthening safeguards for advocates in Goa.
At an earlier hearing, the High Court had asked the High Court Bar Association of Goa to examine the draft Goa Advocate Protection Bill, 2026, and submit its suggestions to the government.
The Bench had sought the Bar Association’s views on the proposed legislation, which had been approved by the Goa Cabinet in March but has not yet been enacted by the state Assembly.
The proposed Bill seeks to address incidents involving violence, assault and intimidation against advocates, besides providing safeguards against alleged false implication while lawyers are performing their professional duties.
