NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins today on a two-day visit to Moscow for the 22nd India-Russia summit scheduled on July 8 and 9, marking his first visit to Russia since the country’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
During his visit, PM Modi will meet with President Vladimir Putin, their first meeting since they convened in the far eastern port of Vladivostok in 2019. They also met in person in September 2022 at a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization bloc in Uzbekistan.
The annual summit between the Indian Prime Minister and the Russian President serves as the highest institutional dialogue mechanism in their strategic partnership, with 21 previous summits alternating between India and Russia. The last summit took place on December 6, 2021, in New Delhi, during Russian President Putin’s visit to India.
In an interview on Sunday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the agenda for PM Modi’s visit will be extensive, with opportunities for both formal discussions and informal talks between the leaders.
“We are expecting a very important and full-fledged visit, which is so crucial for Russian-Indian relations,” Peskov stated in an interview.
