New Delhi: Former England all-rounder Ravi Bopara has urged caution amid mounting speculation surrounding the future of England Test captain Ben Stokes, insisting it would be a “shame” if the star all-rounder’s international career ended because of the ongoing off-field controversy.
Stokes is reportedly set to hold discussions with his advisors regarding his future as an investigation continues into an alleged nightclub incident involving teammate Gus Atkinson and rugby player Totoa Auvaa. The incident allegedly resulted in injuries to an England security officer who was accompanying the players.
The matter has prompted discussions within the England and Wales Cricket Board, with officials reportedly considering disciplinary action for breaches of team protocol. Possible sanctions could include fines or suspensions as the investigation progresses.
According to reports, Stokes will meet former England batter and long-time advisor Neil Fairbrother before making a decision on whether to continue as England captain, step away from leadership duties, or take an extended break from cricket.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Bopara stressed the importance of allowing the investigation to conclude before drawing conclusions about Stokes’ future.
“I think it’s important that the right process is followed and that nobody rushes to judgment,” Bopara said, describing Stokes as one of the most influential figures in English cricket.
The former all-rounder added that retirement under such circumstances would be an unfortunate ending for a player who has played a pivotal role in England’s recent successes.
“If he retires because of this situation, it would be a very sad way to go. If there are other reasons, such as fitness concerns or a desire to move on, that is different. But it would be a shame to see him leave the game on the back of this controversy,” Bopara said.
The outcome of the investigation is expected to play a key role in determining Stokes’ next move.
