OLD GOA: Old Goa Police have registered a cheating case after a 48-year-old man from Cumbharjua, Tiswadi, was allegedly duped of Rs 3,78,678 through a fake e-challan message.
According to police, the incident occurred on September 23 at Zarcantor Wada, Cumbharjua. The complainant, Sandeep s/o Govind Gaude, received an SMS on his mobile phone stating that an e-challan of Rs 2,000 had been generated for his vehicle bearing registration number GA 07 P 0936.
The message reportedly contained a link to view the challan and make the payment. Believing the message and link to be genuine, Gaude clicked on it. Soon after, a total amount of Rs 3,78,678 was allegedly debited automatically from his bank account.
Following the complaint, Old Goa Police registered Crime No. 123/2026 under Section 318(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, pertaining to cheating.
The case was registered on October 5 at 11.06 pm against unknown accused persons. Police are investigating the fraudulent transaction and attempting to identify those behind the fake e-challan link.
The investigation is being conducted by PSI Sanket S. Pokhare.
