PANAJI:Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has accused the ruling BJP of deliberately delaying the appointment of a new Lokayukta in Goa, calling it evidence of the party’s hollow promises on fighting corruption.
Justice (Retd) Ambadas Joshi’s tenure as Lokayukta ended in December 2024, but the post remains vacant nearly six months later. Alemao pointed out that Justice Joshi himself was appointed after a six-month gap following the end of his predecessor Justice (Retd) P K Misra’s term in September 2020, suggesting a pattern of indifference to maintaining the anti-corruption watchdog’s continuity.
“The BJP, which gave a ‘mantra’ of zero tolerance to corruption, appears to be deliberately delaying the appointment of the Lokayukta,” Alemao said. “If they are truly committed to eradicating corruption, why the delay? Is the party hesitant to face complaints in corruption cases?”
He warned that without a Lokayukta in place, pending cases are likely to languish, and justice will be delayed for complainants. Alemao alleged that the government’s inaction exposes its stated commitment to accountability and transparency as nothing more than empty rhetoric.
Opposition parties and civil society groups have long argued that an active, independent Lokayukta is essential to ensure credible investigation of corruption complaints against public officials in Goa.
